Re-Discovering The Female Heart

What is a Female Heart? Is it simply as it was said? Does it mean more?

That is actually the questions in my head when I was able to see the media preview of Linda Faigao's The Female Heart that UP Playwright staged from July 1 to July 10 at the Wilfrido Ma. Guerrero Theater at the University of the Philippines Diliman. Also being the directional debut of Banaue Miclat-Janssen  of UPPT which is also her silver year in the theater industry.

Premise:

Set in the late 1980's the play follows Adelfa (played by Chase Salazar)
and her elder brother Anghel's (Played by Al Gatmaitan) struggle as resident of the infamous mountain of garbage popularly known as Smokey Mountain. Confronted by extreme poverty and her brother's ailing health, Adelfa agrees to become a mail-order bride in the United States.

This play shows the reality of life's tragedies which will awaken the spectator's about the vividness of pain and despair, but also our pursuit of love and hope.

Watching the play, I can see relate somehow in some instances in the play especially on the family structure. One thing that struck me is how Anghel took the role of being the father figure not just for Adelfa, but also with their mother. He did all he can so he can provide well for his family, but risking his life in the process.

I think the play is something to watch for because it showcases the diverse facets of what a female heart it. It is also not just limited to the gender but also your perspective on how to give love.
